Firstly, this project was a lot of fun to do. The words me and my partner chose were moon, ocean, stars, love and light. After picking out the words we started talking about our visions and what ideas do these words give us. Before that talk I have watched Euphoria’s special episode where Jules one of the main characters talks about how the ocean is so strong, beautiful and feminine. I mentioned this to my partner, and we agreed this is a good start point. Going of that idea we investigated Greek mythology and got the idea of making two goddesses fall in love
After more research we did mind maps, sketches and storyboards. We sketched till we got some drawings and pictures we liked. Then we proceeded to do our color pallet and have a timed plan so we will finish on time. We split the work and got on with it. Unfortunately, my partner got sick which meant her side of the work got delayed a bit, but we still managed to finish. Because she felt ill, I managed to carry on working while she was available via text to check what I’m doing stays with our vision and story.
Our concept involved a little bit of real facts like how the moon affects the water tides. But of course, we had to put some imagination in there as well. Therefore, we figure that it will be a little bit said story. When the moon makes its full cycle and is up the water makes it to the moon just for one touch, but they can never stay together. The way they also communicate is through the moon’s light reflection. Their separators are the stars.
In the video I could have shown the light reflection much better and how the stars try and keep them apart. As part of an improvement, I could have also edited their touch for longer time and zoom in more to really get the moment right. That is something I will do next time I do a similar project.
But I am happy about how it all came together. The color palette really came through and the music as well. I used garage band and sound trap to make all the sounds from scratch. I remember what I learned through the sound week, and I tried applying those tricks like listening closely to your surroundings and you can pick up sounds that could turn into something. Even you can create art by just listening and drawing what you hear. I applied these into creating the sound and some parts of the visuals for the video. I also loved the texture of the sky which I created with blender. I just created a simple plain and added Voronoi, Musgrave and bump nods. As for the rest of the background I used after effects which was a challenge mainly because I have only used it in motion graphics week. I tried remembering all the tricks that the teacher showed us, and I applied most of those techniques onto the video.
Overall, I liked working in partners. Also, I really like our outcome even though we had some challenges, but we still managed. The video looks great but could use some improvements which I mentioned. My experience throughout this project was very good. I have never worked in partners before it was always teams. I think in some ways it is easier to just work in twos. Mainly because its easier to share ideas and do something that would suit both of your styles more. When you work in bigger groups its harder to find one style that suits everybody.
I was very happy with my partner, and I think we worked well together. We split the work according to our strengths. I even challenged myself by doing 2D. I usually do 3D or use 3D software to create animation. But this time I really wanted to do something different and challenge myself. Especially because I was inspired by the 8 weeks rotation to try something I wouldn’t by myself. I am happy I did, and I turned out better then what I expected.
I have also learned a lot about after effects and how much you can do with it. For example, two of the effects I learned was the luma key and how you can parent layers to each other. But finally I am very happy with our outcome and I really enjoyed working with Naomi.
